MBBS Eligibility in India
Understand the academic subjects, NEET-UG requirement, age and document checks involved in MBBS admission. The current official bulletin and counselling rules always control the final decision.

The eligibility decision has several layers
MBBS eligibility is not decided by one percentage shown on a college advertisement. An applicant normally has to satisfy the qualifying-examination conditions, the current NEET-UG conditions, the relevant category and document rules, and the requirements of the counselling authority or institution through which the seat is allotted.
Students should check these layers separately. Being permitted to appear for an entrance examination does not by itself guarantee eligibility for every counselling quota or institution. Likewise, qualifying the examination does not guarantee a seat. Admission depends on rank, category, quota, preferences, seat availability, document verification and completion of reporting within the prescribed time.

- Current NEET-UG eligibility and qualification

- Counselling quota, domicile or institutional rules
- Original-document verification and reporting
Class 12 subjects and qualifying education
Applicants should confirm the current requirement for Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English in the qualifying examination. The exact wording, treatment of practical examinations, permitted boards, additional subjects and minimum marks must be read from the current official documents rather than copied from an older admission year.
Students from alternative boards, open-school routes, international curricula or improvement examinations should not assume equivalence. They should obtain the appropriate equivalence or eligibility confirmation when the current rules require it. A college cannot safely resolve this question through an informal phone assurance; keep written evidence from the responsible authority.
NEET-UG qualification
NEET-UG is the national entrance route used for MBBS admission. The examination authority publishes the application conditions and result, while counselling bodies apply their own current rules to eligible candidates. A student should distinguish the qualifying percentile from the score obtained, All India Rank and the closing rank for a particular seat.
The qualifying cutoff only indicates whether the candidate crossed the examination threshold for the relevant category. It is not the admission cutoff of a college. College allotment results depend on the counselling year, round, quota, category, seat type and choices submitted by candidates.
Age, nationality and candidate status
Age requirements and the treatment of Indian citizens, Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India, foreign nationals or other candidate groups can change through law, regulation, court decisions or the current bulletin. Use the wording applicable to the admission year. Do not rely on a coaching poster or an archived article for a high-stakes eligibility decision.
NRI, OCI and foreign-national admission may also require specific documentary evidence and may involve different counselling or institutional procedures. Candidate status can affect the quota available, fee structure and list of documents, so it must be resolved before choice filling or payment.
Category, domicile and PwBD documentation
Reservation benefits apply only when the candidate satisfies the current conditions and presents documents in the prescribed format, issued by the competent authority and valid for the relevant period. Central and state formats are not always interchangeable. Name, parent details, category spelling and dates should match across the application and supporting records.
State counselling can apply domicile, schooling, nativity or residence rules. These rules differ between states and can change by admission year. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities should use the current examination and counselling instructions, including any designated assessment process. Obtain certificates early because correction windows and reporting deadlines can be short.
Common documents to prepare
The final document list comes from the current counselling and reporting notices. A working folder can nevertheless reduce last-minute problems. Keep originals securely, prepare legible copies, and maintain a backed-up digital set with clear filenames.
- NEET-UG application, admit card, result or scorecard and allotment documents
- Class 10 certificate for identity or date-of-birth evidence where requested
- Class 12 marksheet, passing certificate and subject evidence
- Government identity documents and recent photographs in the prescribed format
- Category, EWS, PwBD, domicile, NRI or other applicable certificates
- Migration, transfer, conduct, medical fitness or gap documents when required
A safe eligibility workflow
First, read the current NEET-UG bulletin. Second, read the current counselling bulletin for the quota you intend to use. Third, check the college and university reporting instructions. Fourth, compare every spelling and date across your records. Finally, seek a written clarification from the responsible authority if your education, category or candidate status is unusual.
MedCollege explains the decision but cannot certify an individual applicant. Eligibility is confirmed only through the competent examination, counselling and admission authorities for the current cycle.
