Skills students should develop
ANMs need communication, cultural sensitivity, infection control, maternal and child-health knowledge, documentation, teamwork and referral judgement. They should protect privacy, obtain appropriate consent and follow authorised schedules and protocols.
An ANM must not independently diagnose complex conditions, prescribe outside lawful authority, perform procedures without training or delay referral during emergencies. High-risk pregnancy, heavy bleeding, seizures, severe breathing difficulty, newborn danger signs and other urgent problems require immediate escalation.
