Skills students should develop
Students need patience, precision, anatomy and physiology knowledge, technical problem-solving and respectful patient communication. Correct electrode placement, impedance checking, calibration, artefact recognition and accurate event documentation are essential.
Technologists often work with children, older adults, unconscious patients and people experiencing seizures or anxiety. They must explain procedures calmly, protect privacy, follow emergency protocols and communicate important changes immediately.
Professional judgement includes knowing when a recording is technically unreliable and when to alert the clinical team. It does not include independently giving a diagnosis, predicting prognosis or recommending treatment.
