Skills students should develop
Technologists need aseptic technique, machine checks, accurate calculations, patient communication, documentation and early recognition of hypotension, cramps, bleeding, disequilibrium, access problems or allergic reactions. Emergencies must be escalated immediately.
Dialysis is prescribed by a nephrologist or authorised medical practitioner. Technologists must not independently select treatment duration, dialyser, anticoagulation, fluid removal or medication. They do not create vascular access and should cannulate or handle access only when trained, authorised and supervised under policy.
