Major subjects and learning areas

Common subjects include public-health principles, anatomy and physiology basics, microbiology, communicable and non-communicable diseases, epidemiology, environmental sanitation, water supply, food hygiene, nutrition, occupational health, waste management and health education.

Students may also study vital statistics, demographics, housing and ventilation, vector control, disaster response, first aid, maternal and child health, public-health laws, inspection methods, report writing and computerised records. Legal content must reflect the jurisdiction where the programme operates.

Practical learning may cover sanitary surveys, inspection checklists, water-sample collection support, chlorine and disinfection concepts, vector-breeding identification, food-premises observation, waste segregation, outbreak line lists, community surveys and health talks.

Students should learn accurate documentation, applicable chain-of-custody processes, confidentiality, risk communication and escalation. Sampling, seizure, closure, penalties and enforcement actions can require formal statutory appointment; a diploma alone does not grant those powers.
