Academic, practical and internship timeline

BMLS is a four-year undergraduate programme, including a one-year compulsory internship involving laboratory rotation or an approved research-dissertation component.

The internship is equivalent to 12 months, 52 weeks or 1,800 hours and carries 40 credits in the national curriculum. It must be completed before the degree can be awarded. If a student chooses the research-dissertation route, the prescribed structure includes at least six months of dissertation work.

Laboratory rotations should provide supervised experience across major disciplines such as haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, immunology and transfusion medicine. Students should maintain required records or a logbook and receive an authenticated internship certificate describing their activities, postings and hours.

Before joining a college, confirm the internship site, departmental rotations, supervision, case volume, dissertation options, assessment method and whether the institution arranges the placement.
