Understanding the BMLS pathway
What is BMLS?
Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) is an undergraduate allied-health programme that prepares students to perform, assess and manage laboratory investigations used in disease detection, diagnosis support, treatment monitoring and health screening.
The current national curriculum uses Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science as the standard qualification. Colleges may still advertise older or related names such as B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, B.Sc. MLT or BMLT. Applicants should compare the approved curriculum, duration, internship and final degree title rather than relying only on the advertised name.
Who should consider this course?
Students study haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, histopathology, cytology, molecular diagnostics and transfusion medicine. They also learn specimen collection and processing, analyser operation, biosafety, quality control, laboratory information systems and accurate reporting workflows.
Medical laboratory scientists generate reliable laboratory data and collaborate with clinicians. They are not medical doctors and must not independently prescribe treatment or present laboratory findings as a complete clinical diagnosis outside their authorised scope.

Entry requirements
BMLS eligibility
Eligibility can change by admission year and candidate category. Treat the current official examination and counselling documents as controlling.
| Eligibility check | What the applicant should confirm |
|---|
| Qualifying education | Applicants should have completed Senior Secondary (10+2) or an equivalent recognised examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The current curriculum specifies a minimum of 50% marks for the standard entry route. Any relaxation for reserved categories must be checked under the applicable government, council or university rules. |
|---|
| Admission-year conditions | Students from boards where English was not compulsory may need additional English learning as prescribed. Applicants educated outside India should confirm equivalence and documentary requirements before applying. |
|---|
| Documents and verification | Candidates must have completed 17 years of age at admission or must complete 17 years on or before 31 December of the admission year. A medical-fitness certificate endorsed by a government medical officer is mandatory. |
|---|
Stored course eligibility summaryApplicants should complete 10+2 or an accepted equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, normally meet the current minimum-marks requirement, complete the stated age condition and provide the prescribed medical-fitness documentation. Candidates must verify category relaxation, equivalence, lateral-entry and counselling requirements in the current responsible notice.
Academic scope
Duration, syllabus and learning areas
The exact syllabus, rotations and assessment follow the current regulator, university and institution curriculum. These are the major areas applicants should expect to investigate.
| Training phase | Major focus |
|---|
| Programme structure | BMLS is a four-year undergraduate programme, including a one-year compulsory internship involving laboratory rotation or an approved research-dissertation component. |
|---|
| Academic and practical progression | The internship is equivalent to 12 months, 52 weeks or 1,800 hours and carries 40 credits in the national curriculum. It must be completed before the degree can be awarded. If a student chooses the research-dissertation route, the prescribed structure includes at least six months of dissertation work. |
|---|
| Internship and completion | Laboratory rotations should provide supervised experience across major disciplines such as haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, immunology and transfusion medicine. Students should maintain required records or a logbook and receive an authenticated internship certificate describing their activities, postings and hours. |

Fees, seats and admission details
Fees and seats belong to a college, academic year, category and source. A blank seat value means MedCollege has not stored a sufficiently current verified intake—not that the programme has no seats.
The first-year planning figure excludes a separately identified refundable caution deposit where the official fee schedule permits that calculation. A range means the amount varies by specialisation. The published total shown is the course fee in the cited notice; hostel, mess and personal expenses may be separate.
