What is the standard name of the course?

The current national nomenclature is Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS). Some institutions may continue to use B.Sc. MLT or related titles.

How long is BMLS?

It is a four-year programme that includes one compulsory year of internship, laboratory rotation or an approved research-dissertation component.

How is admission decided?

Admission is based on merit in the Senior Secondary (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination through the applicable counselling or institutional process.

Is the internship compulsory?

Yes. Students must complete the prescribed 12-month, 52-week or 1,800-hour internship component before the BMLS degree is awarded.

Is BMLS the same as pathology?

No. Pathology is a medical specialty. BMLS prepares laboratory professionals who perform and manage diagnostic testing within their authorised scope.

Can graduates open a diagnostic laboratory?

Ownership, technical supervision, staffing and registration requirements depend on applicable laws and local rules. A BMLS degree should not be treated as automatic permission to establish or medically supervise every type of laboratory.

Can graduates independently diagnose disease?

No. Laboratory results contribute to clinical assessment, but diagnosis and treatment require appropriate medical evaluation.

What laboratory departments are covered?

Training commonly covers clinical biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, immunology, histopathology, cytology, molecular diagnostics and transfusion medicine.

Is a stipend paid during internship?

Students shall be paid a stipend during their internship. The amount is decided by the applicable State Allied and Healthcare Council, and candidates should confirm the current payment procedure with the institution.

What should I check before joining a college?

Verify the BMLS-aligned curriculum, four-year duration, affiliation, laboratories, specimen volume, biosafety, quality systems, qualified supervision, internship rotations, complete fees and recent graduate outcomes.
