BASLP Syllabus and Subjects
Explore the scientific foundations, audiology, speech-language pathology, research and supervised clinical components of BASLP.

Foundational sciences
BASLP connects anatomy and physiology of hearing, speech and swallowing with acoustics, electronics, linguistics, phonetics, psychology, human development, neurology, research methods and statistics. These subjects help students understand why a test is selected, how a result should be interpreted and where a referral is required.
Foundations are not isolated classroom topics. They support later decisions about hearing loss, speech and language development, voice, fluency, neurological communication, swallowing and rehabilitation technology.
Audiology learning
Audiology commonly covers hearing science, case history, pure-tone and speech testing, masking and test interpretation. Diagnostic learning expands to immittance, otoacoustic emissions, auditory evoked responses and specialised behavioural assessment. Paediatric audiology adds developmentally appropriate testing, screening, family counselling and early intervention.
Students also study hearing aids, implantable devices, assistive technology, verification, orientation, auditory training, hearing conservation and rehabilitative counselling. Equipment should be calibrated and used within an appropriate test environment.
Speech-language pathology learning
Speech-language pathology covers typical speech and language development, speech-sound disorders, receptive and expressive language, social communication, fluency and voice. Advanced areas include motor-speech disorders, aphasia, traumatic brain injury, dementia, cleft and craniofacial communication, and foundations of swallowing assessment and rehabilitation.
Intervention should be person-centred and meaningful rather than a collection of exercises. Students learn to set measurable goals, monitor progress, counsel families and work with multilingual and culturally varied populations.
Clinical practicum and professional behaviour
Clinical practicum teaches case history, test administration, interpretation, intervention planning, counselling, report writing and follow-up under supervision. Consent, privacy, safe equipment use, infection control, documentation and ethical referral apply throughout the course.
The institution’s current semester scheme should be used for exact subject names, credits and assessments. A national guide can explain the structure, but the approved curriculum and university timetable control what a particular cohort studies.
