Skills students should develop
Successful imaging technologists combine anatomy and physics knowledge with precision, patient care and safety discipline. They must correctly identify patients, review authorised requests, prepare and position patients, follow examination protocols and produce diagnostically useful images while avoiding unnecessary exposure.
Important skills include communication, infection control, equipment checks, image-quality evaluation, documentation, teamwork and emergency response. Technologists must understand optimisation principles such as keeping exposure as low as reasonably achievable while still achieving the required image quality.
They should also recognise professional boundaries. Technologists may judge whether an image is technically adequate, but diagnostic interpretation and clinical reporting belong to authorised medical professionals.
