Course overview
What is DMRT?
Diploma in Medical Record Technology is an authority-specific medical-record and health-information qualification. Applicants should compare the exact DMRT award with the current NCAHP Diploma in Health Information Management framework rather than assuming identical eligibility, duration or progression.
Best suited for: Students interested in healthcare information, precise records, medical terminology, coding support, statistics, privacy, digital systems and non-clinical hospital administration.

Understanding the DMRT and DHIM pathway
What is DMRT?
Diploma in Medical Record Technology is a healthcare-administration programme focused on creating, classifying, maintaining, retrieving and protecting patient health records. Similar programmes may be called Diploma in Medical Records Technology, Medical Records and Health Information Technology or Diploma in Health Information Management.
The current NCAHP competency-based curriculum uses the national diploma title Diploma in Health Information Management (DHIM). A college offering Diploma in Medical Record Technology (DMRT) must still identify the exact university, state board or competent awarding authority behind that title. Applicants should not assume that every DMRT programme has automatically adopted the NCAHP DHIM duration, eligibility, internship or progression framework.
Who should consider this course?
Medical-record personnel support healthcare delivery, administration, insurance, quality improvement, statistics and lawful information exchange. They do not diagnose patients or decide medical treatment. The qualification should prepare them to manage sensitive records accurately while working with clinicians, administrators, information-technology teams and authorised external stakeholders.

Entry requirements
DMRT eligibility
Eligibility can change by admission year and candidate category. Treat the current official examination and counselling documents as controlling.
| Eligibility check | What the applicant should confirm |
|---|
| Qualifying education | For the current NCAHP Diploma in Health Information Management reference pathway, applicants should have passed 10+2 or an equivalent recognised examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics. The curriculum states a minimum age of 17 years, a maximum age of 30 years, physical-fitness evidence and two character references. |
|---|
| Admission-year conditions | A programme advertised under the DMRT title may follow a different current university or state-board rule. Some local diplomas accept SSLC or Class 10, while others require 10+2, Science, English, computer knowledge or prescribed marks. Candidates must use the current approved prospectus for the exact award rather than transferring DHIM criteria to every similarly named course. |
|---|
| Documents and verification | Open-school, vocational and overseas applicants should obtain written confirmation of recognition and equivalence before admission. Reservation, domicile, age relaxation, medical fitness and document requirements follow the responsible authority. |
|---|
Stored course eligibility summaryThe current NCAHP DHIM framework uses 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics, age and fitness conditions, while locally approved DMRT rules may differ. Verify the exact awarding authority and current prospectus.
Academic scope
Duration, syllabus and learning areas
The exact syllabus, rotations and assessment follow the current regulator, university and institution curriculum. These are the major areas applicants should expect to investigate.
| Training phase | Major focus |
|---|
| Programme structure | The approved NCAHP DHIM curriculum specifies 2.5 years or five semesters, including a six-month internship. It describes 1,465 hours of theory, 655 hours of practical classes and 720 internship hours. This is a useful national reference but does not silently change the duration of every existing DMRT programme. |
|---|
| Academic and practical progression | DMRT courses offered by state boards, universities or institutions may publish a different academic and hospital-training period. Their approved prospectus should state the normal duration, maximum completion period, attendance, practical hours, examinations, internship and project requirements. |
|---|
| Internship and completion | A credible programme should include supervised experience in a functioning hospital medical-record or health-information department. Students need exposure to registration, record assembly, deficiency checking, indexing, retention, retrieval, scanning, disclosure workflows, coding support, statistics and digital health-information systems. Classroom instruction alone is not sufficient preparation. |
