Understanding the GNM nursing pathway
What is GNM?
General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a three-year nursing programme that prepares students to provide supervised and accountable nursing care across hospitals, community settings and maternal-health services. The curriculum combines biological and behavioural sciences, nursing foundations, medical-surgical care, child health, mental health, community nursing and midwifery.
GNM graduates care for individuals and families across the lifespan. Their responsibilities may include patient assessment, implementation of prescribed care, medicine administration within nursing authority, wound care, infection prevention, health education, emergency response, maternal and newborn support and accurate documentation.
Who should consider this course?
GNM is different from ANM and B.Sc. Nursing. ANM focuses more narrowly on community and primary maternal-child services, while B.Sc. Nursing is a four-year university degree with broader academic and research preparation. GNM remains a recognised pathway leading to Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife registration after successful completion and fulfilment of registration requirements.

Academic scope
Duration, syllabus and learning areas
The exact syllabus, rotations and assessment follow the current regulator, university and institution curriculum. These are the major areas applicants should expect to investigate.
| Training phase | Major focus |
|---|
| Programme structure | The current GNM training duration is three years. Older information may still describe it as three and a half years, but the programme has been listed as three years from the 2015–16 academic session. |
|---|
| Academic and practical progression | Training combines classroom learning, nursing laboratories, simulation, supervised hospital postings and community experience. Students must satisfy prescribed theory and clinical attendance, practical competencies, case work, nursing-care plans, assignments, internal assessments and nursing-board examinations. |
|---|
| Internship and completion | Clinical experience is integral throughout the programme rather than an optional short placement. The exact academic calendar, vacation periods, hours and assessment distribution follow the adopted syllabus and rules of the relevant nursing examination authority. |
