Skills students should develop
GNM students develop observation, communication, clinical judgement, teamwork, infection control, medicine safety, health education and documentation. Nurses must protect privacy, obtain appropriate consent, maintain accurate records and treat patients without discrimination.
GNM registration does not make a graduate a medical doctor or independent prescriber. Nurses implement authorised care, use nursing judgement within their scope and escalate changes to the appropriate medical or senior nursing professional. They must not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe outside lawful authority, falsify records or perform procedures beyond training and institutional policy.
Safe practice also includes hand hygiene, sharps safety, biomedical-waste management, correct patient identification and reporting of medication errors or occupational exposures.
