Understanding the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing pathway

What is Post Basic B.Sc Nursing?

Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing is a university degree for nurses who have completed General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) and hold valid nurse and midwife registration. It builds on diploma-level nursing education through advanced clinical, community-health, teaching, administration and research learning.

After successful completion, the qualification is recorded as an additional nursing qualification through the applicable nursing-registration system. It does not replace the nurse’s original RN/RM registration; both the base registration and additional qualification should remain correctly recorded and renewed where required.

Entry requirements

Post Basic B.Sc Nursing eligibility

Eligibility can change by admission year and candidate category. Treat the current official examination and counselling documents as controlling.

Eligibility checkWhat the applicant should confirm
Qualifying educationApplicants must have passed Higher Secondary, Senior Secondary, Intermediate, 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognised by the university. Candidates who completed 10+1 in or before 1986 may be eligible under the applicable provision. They must hold a GNM certificate and be registered as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife with a State Nurses Registration Council.
Admission-year conditionsEligible male nurses trained before implementation of the integrated GNM course may produce evidence of approved training of comparable duration in lieu of midwifery in a prescribed nursing specialty. Candidates must be medically fit. A universal work-experience requirement should not be stated unless the admitting university, state authority or approved distance route specifically requires it.

Typical entry follows 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with the subjects, marks, age and entrance requirements specified for the programme. Verify the current regulator and admission-authority notice.

How to interpret entrance, cutoff and seat information

Current selection route

Ensure RN/RM registration is valid and personal details match across school, GNM and registration records. Resolve name or date-of-birth discrepancies early. If experience is required, obtain a properly signed certificate stating designation and dates. Working nurses should plan leave for classes, examinations and clinical postings.

Academic scope

Duration, syllabus and learning areas

The exact syllabus, rotations and assessment follow the current regulator, university and institution curriculum. These are the major areas applicants should expect to investigate.

Training phaseMajor focus
Programme structureThe regular programme lasts two years. The approved distance-education route is listed as three years. Distance mode is not simply an online version of the regular programme: it must be offered through an authorised system with approved study centres, contact sessions, supervised clinical requirements and university examinations.
Academic and practical progressionBefore selecting distance education, confirm that the route is currently approved for the institution, university, study centre and admission year. Check eligibility, experience, attendance, contact-programme, examination and clinical-posting requirements. Do not enrol solely because an agent claims the programme can be completed remotely.
