AIIMS New Delhi: a medical campus built around teaching, research and patient care

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi brings medical education and a major public hospital environment together at Ansari Nagar. Its institutional identity rests on three connected activities: educating health professionals, investigating health problems and caring for patients.

Created in 1956 through an Act of Parliament, AIIMS is an autonomous institution of national importance that awards its own degrees. Its origins include the work of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur and a New Zealand grant under the Colombo Plan. The foundation stone was laid in 1952.

For an applicant, the setting matters as much as the name. Learning extends beyond lecture rooms into wards, outpatient clinics, laboratories and supervised clinical work. Students interested in academic medicine can explore a network of departments, specialty centres, research support and library resources.

This profile focuses on AIIMS New Delhi. Other AIIMS institutions have their own campus facilities, course offerings, reporting instructions and admission matrices. Always select the institute and programme explicitly when checking a counselling document.

MBBS fees: understand the source year first

The detailed amounts below are from the AIIMS New Delhi MBBS prospectus for 2023, page 7. They are historical reference amounts, not a confirmed 2026–27 invoice or an annual tuition quotation.

Academic item — 2023 prospectus Amount
Registration fee ₹25
Caution money ₹100
Tuition fee as shown in the prospectus ₹1,350
Laboratory fee ₹90
Student Union fee ₹63
Academic and other fees subtotal ₹1,628

The same prospectus lists a hostel-and-other-fees subtotal of ₹4,228, including refundable security deposits. Adding the two published subtotals gives ₹5,856. Do not interpret that historical combined figure as the annual cost of attending AIIMS: it does not represent recurring food, travel, personal or study expenses.

For payment, use the current AIIMS reporting instructions and the amount shown by the authorised institutional payment process. Fee revisions, nationality, accommodation and programme can change what is payable.

The revised August 2026 reporting schedule directs candidates to pay the requisite academic and hostel fees but does not provide a new numeric fee table. The 2023 amounts above therefore remain explicitly historical.

How to evaluate an AIIMS cutoff

Term Meaning for your application
Qualifying threshold Eligibility to participate; it is not an assurance of an AIIMS seat
Allotment rank Rank of a candidate allotted a specific institute, course, category and round
Opening / closing rank A summary that must identify the year, round, quota and category
Score Marks cannot be compared across years as if exam difficulty and competition were unchanged

Use the official MCC allotment results for MBBS and the AIIMS seat-allocation documents for INI programmes. Avoid a single undated “AIIMS cutoff” number: it can mix different campuses, categories or rounds.

For a meaningful comparison, write down the admission year, course, institute, round, allotted category and rank type. Check the subsequent reporting or joining rules as well. A past allotment pattern is context for planning, not a promise about the next round.

Rankings and institutional disclosures answer different questions

Published ranking

A ranking position should identify the ranking body, category and year. Consult the published NIRF Medical ranking table for the relevant year.

Institutional submission

AIIMS publishes documents submitted to NIRF. They contain historical intake, student, outcome and research data; their title does not establish a rank for that year.

Department fit

An institution-wide position cannot replace checking the training environment, course content and supervision in your chosen subject.

The AIIMS website lists medical submissions for 2026 and earlier years. This profile uses the 2026 submission for clearly dated historical data. It does not infer a 2026 rank from that document.

When comparing colleges, keep the ranking category consistent. Medical, dental, overall and research tables measure different groups and should not be combined as though they were the same league table.
