Five and a half years
The NCISM Minimum Standards of Undergraduate Ayurveda Education Regulations describe the BAMS programme as three professional sessions of eighteen months each followed by a twelve-month compulsory rotating internship. This produces the standard five-and-a-half-year pathway.
The course can take longer when a student has supplementary examinations, inadequate attendance, incomplete practical or clinical work, health leave or delayed internship completion. The university calendar and applicable regulations determine progression for a specific cohort.
Professional phases
The first professional phase establishes Ayurvedic principles, Sanskrit and Samhita study, human structure and normal function. Later phases expand into medicinal substances, pharmaceutics, pathology, diagnosis, prevention, internal medicine, Panchakarma, surgery-related subjects, eye and ENT-related learning, women’s health, obstetrics, paediatrics and clinical practice.
Learning includes lectures, demonstrations, practical classes, medicinal-plant and pharmacy work, seminars, case discussions, hospital postings and periodic assessment. Passing theory alone is not the full educational outcome; attendance and practical competence are essential.
Compulsory rotating internship
The one-year internship develops supervised responsibility across clinical and community settings prescribed by the current framework. Rotations may include Kayachikitsa, Shalya, Shalakya, Prasuti and Stri Roga, Kaumarbhritya, Panchakarma, preventive healthcare, community services and appropriate emergency or referral exposure.
Interns must complete the required attendance, rotations, records and competencies. A stipend may be paid in some institutions or states, but it is not universal. Confirm the written policy and any travel or accommodation cost before planning finances.
